evening

As the darkness gathered, as the gibbous moon began to cast shadows, Lyn and Blue and I sat on the deck looking over the meadow. The lights of Utah Valley scattered below and Utah Lake shimmered in the moonlight. Blue heard something and watched and listened and sniffed. We followed his attention and finally saw a deer separate itself from the oakbrush. Antlers in the moonlight. The buck moved into the shadow of the house, toward the tub of water standing in the meadow. Blue turned his head and ears to the west. "Calico Bennett Feral" (as she is known on the vet's records) hunted up the meadow. Crickets filled the night air with their hopes to get laid. A slight breeze.
